MANILA, Philippines—San Beda continued to surge at the start of the second round of the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball after notching its fourth straight win.

The Red Lions downed Arellano, 79-65, at San Juan Arena on Saturday to bounce back from their first round loss against the Chiefs and improve to a 7-3 card.

San Beda newcomer Bismarck Lina led the charge with 20 points and seven rebounds while Yukien Andrada scored 15 in the win. Latest Collegiate Press Corps’ Player of the Week Jomel Puno also proved his mettle anew with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball schedule

Lorenz Capulong dropped 16 points and five rebounds but to no avail as the Chiefs dropped to a 3-7 card. Jaedan Ongotan also scattered 10 points in the loss.

Following a loss to the Red Lions to end the first round of the tourney, Mapua started the second leg with a win over Jose Rizal University, 75-71.

The Cardinals’ win kept them in the tight race for the second seed alongside San Beda with an identical 7-3 record, just a game behind top-seeded College of St. Benilde (7-2).

Yam Concepcion nearly registered a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds for Mapua. Reigning MVP Clint Escamis also tallied 14 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the victory. Chris Hubilla and Marc Cuenco also chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The duo of Shawn Argente and Joshua Guiab combined for 32 points, 16 each, but it wasn’t enough as the Heavy Bombers crashed to a 3-7 card.

Mapua looks to keep its winning ways and secure the second seed further on Tuesday when the Cardinals face Emilio Aguinaldo College.
